Requiem (2006)
Directed by Hans-Christian Schmid
Michaela, an epileptic, enrolls in college to study education. She goes off her medication and soon begins hearing voices and seeing apparitions that tell her to avoid religious objects, although she is devoutly Roman Catholic. One priest scoffs at the idea that Michaela could be possessed by demons, but a younger pastor arranges an exorcism for the young woman.

What critics compared Requiem to
Yet this British production is actually closer in tone to such German offerings as Hans-Christian Schmid’s 2006 masterpiece Requiem (inspired by the tragic real-life case of Anneliese Michel), or Dietrich Brüggemann’s Stations of the Cross (2014) in which spiritual sacrifice mingles with self-harm.
Others have compared The Witch to Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In , although I found myself thinking more of Hans-Christian Schmid’s Requiem as a thematic companion piece.
