What critics compared Pulse to
You can see Wilson’s influences, from The Sixth Sense (a frat ghost caked in vomit is reminiscent of Mischa Barton’s jump scare in Shyamalan’s film) to Kiyoshi Kurosawa (ghosts slowly creeping their way toward the camera in the background are reminiscent of Pulse, Cure, and Retribution).
And though the film takes more than a few pages from early-2000s J-horror, its somber gloss is more reminiscent of that regional boom’s American remakes, such as Gore Verbinski’s The Ring , Jim Sonzero’s Pulse , and Eric Valette’s One Missed Call .
Fans of the Gothic have had to make do with a handful of Japanese ghost stories (including Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s chilling Pulse ), a couple of visionary films by horror standard-bearer Guillermo del Toro, The Orphanage (a decent del Toro imitation), and – bringing up the rear in more than one way – the Paranormal Activity series.
It's an OK idea -- assuming you ignore that movies like "Pulse" have already mined the territory -- but it's only useful at the very end.

But the movie mostly uses its emptiness to its atmospheric advantage—it gifts its world the isolated feeling of J-Horror (I thought of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s masterpiece Pulse especially), where you have the sense that the planes are falling and the apocalypse is happening… you know, just outside.
And Di Quon (2006's " Pulse ") is a comic standout as the put-upon Rita.
