The original original "Ocean's 11," made in 1960 by the Rat Pack, was a send-up of 1950s caper movies (it was inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville's French classic "Bob le Flambeur").
But, then, it was never meant to be.Instead, "Ocean's Twelve" is meant to be more of a throwback to the old 1960 Sinatra/rat-pack film, "Ocean's 11," that inspired both of the newer films.

If Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. and the rest of the Rat Pack that starred in the original "Ocean's 11" saw the remake, they probably would have been proud.
The down time is what really matters, undercut almost imperceptibly by a fractured chronology that Soderbergh makes even more confusing with "Three Years Later" and "Two Weeks Earlier" title cards that are about as helpful as those in Buñuel’s Un chien andalou.
It's not a heist movie, but take “The Sixth Sense,” which “Twelve” references when Bruce Willis stops by for an obligatory cameo.

However, Soderbergh is also the first to point out that if how much fun the actors had on a film is indicative of the quality, then “Smokey and the Bandit” would have been the greatest film ever made.
Right here, the shoddy screenwriting becomes apparent, as Danny identifies this guy, who Europol has been investigating for years, as Baron François Toulour (Vincent Cassel, "The Reckoning"), completely out of the blue.
Other additions to the cast include the barely seen Jeroen Krabbé ("Ever After") as agoraphobic antiquities dealer van der Woude, Jared Harris ("Igby Goes Down") as Basher's London sound engineer, Eddie Izzard ("The Cat's Meow") as an inventor and Sir Anthony Hopkins and Cherry Jones ("The Village") as two of the film's 'surprises.' "Ocean's Twelve" provides some nice scenery in Amsterdam and Lake Como and all the entertainment value of its stars appearing as guests on a talk show.
Instead they fly to Amsterdam but run into trouble because another master thief known as the Night Fox (Vincent Cassel, Irreversible) also covets the objects they�re trying to steal.

Though it may not work in the same way as, say, Frank Oz’ The Score, it works on its own merits.
