Family Guy (1999)

Sick, twisted, politically incorrect and Freakin' Sweet animated series featuring the adventures of the dysfunctional Griffin family. Bumbling Peter and long-suffering Lois have three kids. Stewie (a brilliant but sadistic baby bent on killing his mother and taking over the world), Meg (the oldest, and is the most unpopular girl in town) and Chris (the middle kid, he's not very bright but has a passion for movies). The final member of the family is Brian - a talking dog and much more than a pet, he keeps Stewie in check whilst sipping Martinis and sorting through his own life issues.

What critics compared Family Guy to

The Naked Gun poster
Naturally, not every joke lands. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is among the film’s producers, and when his branch of humour seeps into the fabric – namely, overexcessiveness and cutaway gags – the film nosedives from frequent chuckles to deafening silence.

Comedian Seth MacFarlane served as producer on this film (having been attached to the script and the project for years prior to production), and I get a similar feeling of fatigue at times with his other works, most notably when Family Guy lingers on something entirely too long.

He even had some Family Guy writers take a stab at the script early on…

The Drama poster
Borgli recalibrates the technique, shifting it from feeling like a Family Guy cutaway to something closer to Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage.

They have a Family Guy “Peter and Meg” type of rapport where he throws her under the bus, and she's often ignored while being the brightest person in the room.

…a big chunk of Soldier Boy’s standard “I haven’t done X since Y!” dialogue would usually lead straight into a Peter Griffin flashback on Family Guy…
