Following the “inspirational” family dramedy Wide Awake (which I’ve never seen, and which, like the first few Michael Jackson solo albums, seems to have been stricken from the public consciousness), Shyamalan burst onto the scene in 1999 with his sophomore feature The Sixth Sense.
After a couple of early film failures that he would prefer that you didnt know about (having seen one, 1998s "Wide Awake", I can understand why), Shyamalan hit the big time in 1999 with "The Sixth Sense", a film that spooked many with its low-key shocks and infamous twist ending and annoyed others for being nothing more than an extended "Twilight Zone" knock-off, though admittedly nicely acted, with a final twist that was obvious to anyone who had actually been paying attention to what was going on.
In Wide Awake, a boy about to enter fifth grade at a Catholic school for boys, who is deeply troubled by the death of his grandfather, decides to go on a quest to find God.

While his first film, "Wide Awake" was barely a blip on the cinematic radar screen, his 1999 follow-up, "The Sixth Sense," was a huge hit.
Shyamalan has made the same number of movies Praying With Anger (1992), Wide Awake (1998), The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000) and Signs (2002).
Signs is Shyamalan’s least satisfying film since Wide Awake.
I haven't seen his earlier Wide Awake but I have seen the earlier Praying With Anger.
Shyamalan has progressed quickly from his 1998 debut independent film Praying with Anger through the somewhat disposable Wide Awake and on to his three major releases: The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs and even diversified a bit by writing the Stuart Little screenplay.
