In its exploration of Ava and the extent to which she becomes worthy of human empathy even though she's technically a machine, the piece recalls not only Shelley but also Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (aka Blade Runner in film lingo) and H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau, particularly its repeated refrain of "Are we not men?"
I personally was not looking for “The Island of Dr. Moreau” for dinosaurs.
Despite its grim emphasis, Taken is not without humor; I particularly enjoyed Bryans visit to an old colleague turned Paris police desk jockey, whose oblivious wife serves dinner to the two mutually wary men the way she chirps Carrots? to the brooding Neeson is the funniest offer of food in a movie since Marlon Brando proffered biscuits in The Island of Dr. Moreau.
Wayans approaches the role with a twenty-first century Marlon Brando-esque charm like “Apocalypse Now” (1979) and “The Island of Dr. Moreau” (1996).

Stanley had not made a feature film since being fired off 1996’s infamous bomb The Island of Dr. Moreau and it seems that with his latest he’s learned a serious lesson about not taking anything too seriously.
Color Out of Space marks the first scripted feature from him since his infamous firing from cinematic disasterpiece The Island of Dr. Moreau, over 20 years ago.
It represents a comeback for filmmaker Richard Stanley, whose last feature effort was a failed 1996 attempt to adapt his dream project, The Island of Dr. Moreau.
That makes Richard Stanley perfect for translating Lovecraft’s short story “The Colour Out of Space” into a feature-length film: The last time he tried making a horror movie it was 1994, and the feature was The Island of Dr. Moreau.
Stanley, the director, is making his first film since he was fired as director of 1996's Val Kilmer/Marlon Brando notorious version of The Island of Dr. Moreau, and replaced by John Frankenheimer.
Color Out of Space is Stanley’s first feature since he attempted mainstream success with The Island of Dr. Moreau in 1996.
New Line, who would hit it big with The Lord of the Rings in 1999, had been transformed from a struggling indie company into a relatively successful industry player thanks in large part to the success of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series, but they were far from secure, significant losses on two 1996 releases, The Island of Dr. Moreau and Renny Harlin’s criminally underrated The Long Kiss Goodnight , enforcing a more frugal and cautious approach.
