I love vampire flicks, going all the way to the silent "Nosferatu" through Lugosi and Lee to "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "The Lost Boys."
Director Neil Jordan ( The Crying Game ) imbues several scenes with eerie poetry that honors such great movie fantasists as Jean Cocteau and Nosferatu director F.W. Murnau, and these touches look good on video — this shadowy movie has been sensitively transferred to the small screen.
But the first great vampire movie, " Nosferatu " (1922), knew better, and so does this one.

Despite being a vampire film, there aren’t many scares and there aren’t supposed to be…these aren’t violent vampires like ’Salem’s Lot or The Lost Boys .
In the crucial role of the vampire Lestat, his performance pulsates with that hyper-motivated pep many find appealing, but he just ain't The One. Picture "Blade Runner" replicant Rutger Hauer, picture Nazi commandant Ralph Fiennes, picture really big guy John Goodman before you picture Cruise.
The vampires are like the nomadic young junkies in Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy , hungry for their next fix and ready to lie, cheat, steal or kill to get it.
Clearly, this was filmed in what appears to be a Barry Lyndon-Kubrick-esque style.

Vampire movies told through the eyes of the predator are best-suited for comedy, as in Love at First Bite--well, maybe not best-suited--or metaphor, as in The Hunger.
