Beavan’s creativity and mastery in bringing about the boldest, biggest and most gasp-inducing dress designs we’ve seen since The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , is astounding.
Balem is a more straightforward villain, although 2015 Oscar nominee Eddie Redmayne plays him like he's auditioning for a part in a remake of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert .
Strip away the often silly production design and the even sillier “futuristic” make-up and costuming (in the future, will everyone with money really dress like they’ve stepped out of a touring company of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?), and there’s a reasonably solid action picture underneath.
The Wachowskis, and production designer Owen Paterson (who's been with the brothers since The Matrix, and before that dreamed up the chromatic excesses of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) don't want to evoke feelings so much as visualize them.

Here is where verbalization totally fails: to describe what Martin has achieved as art director and co-costume designer is wholly beyond me, except to say that her Moulin Rouge makes the most rococo scenes from The Cell or The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert look like Italian neo-realism.
