Cliffhanger (1993)

Directed by Renny Harlin

A year after losing his friend in a tragic 4,000-foot fall, former ranger Gabe Walker and his partner, Hal, are called to return to the same peak to rescue a group of stranded climbers, only to learn the climbers are actually thieving hijackers who are looking for boxes full of money.

What critics compared Cliffhanger to

Inception poster
The hallway fight scene involving Arthur belongs in 2003's " The Matrix Reloaded ," where it was done better and featured more innovation; the snow jet chase reminds of more veritably exciting set-pieces from 1993's "Cliffhanger" and 2002's " XXX ," and the most subterranean level seems to steal shots wholesale from the early moments of 2004's " The Day After Tomorrow ."

Now, just like Stallone in "Cliffhanger," Banning has a chance to redeem himself, thanks to a script with more holes in it than the perforated American flag that wafts to a bloodied White House lawn.

Michael Rooker ( Cliffhanger ) and  Diane Lane are barely around as David’s parents, with the latter ostensibly cast in the tragic event a sequel should arise.

Sharing far more similarities with real-life 1993 drama "Alive" than the action-centric likes of 1993's "Cliffhanger" and 2000's "Vertical Limit," director Kormákur is forthright in telling a story more about the ordeal of human endurance than calculated thrills. The ensemble is bursting with great actors, which makes their roles' shortage of complexity somewhat of a missed opportunity.

Director

Renny Harlin

Critics compare Cliffhanger to 3 of Harlin’s own films.

Deep Blue Sea poster
The latest picture from Renny Harlin -- the epic action director responsible for "Cliffhanger," "The Long Kiss Goodnight" and the abysmal "Cutthroat Island" -- this release will surely draw immediate comparisons to the "Jaws" films, but clearly lifts as much source material from any of those sinking boat or aliens in tight quarters pictures.
Director Renny Harlin, who since "Cliffhanger" has not shown much of a flair for anything, seems to have an affinity for ripping humans in half with gory detail.

Directed by Renny Harlin, who directed a couple of entertaining films, "Cutthroat Island" and "The Long Kiss Goodnight," which weren't commercially successful following his popular "Cliffhanger," has once again made a thriller with some teeth in it.
Most directors would simply present a "death" scene, juice it up with middling suspense, and then move on to the next scene, but with Harlin, he always seems to take the action, and intensity, one step further (as in 1993's "Cliffhanger" and 1996's "The Long Kiss Goodnight") so as to amaze and entertain with his particular creativity.

I saw that back to back with a rerun of Cliffhanger, and I thought that was it.
Unlike most music video-trainedwannabes, veteran pop-junk director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2,Cliffhanger) brings in a crisp, unpretentious flick.

In any case, it's no wonder this movie did poorly at the box office, despite its high-profile cast--Val Kilmer, Christian Slater, LL Cool J--and its veteran action director, Renny Harlin ("Nightmare on Elm Street 4," "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," "Cutthroat Island," "Deep Blue Sea," "Driven," "Exorcist: The Beginning").
Renny Harlin can do overt silliness (Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island), or he can do grandiose, perhaps unwarranted self-righteousness ( Exorcist: The Beginning ).
Not that Finish director Renny Harlin ("Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger") and South African writer Wayne Kramer (the excellent "The Cooler" ) don't give it a responsible try.
As he did with his hearty pirate flop Cutthroat Island, director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger) deploys his real-life wife, Davis, as a kind of living rebuke to macho, inviting her to flex, curse, and kill with a lusty gleam in her eye.

Harlin has described this repeatedly as his favorite among his own movies, leaving aside the ones that shoulda been contenders for that honor (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) and those that absolutely shouldn't (Driven, Cutthroat Island, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane).
(Harlin is Geena's husband and director of the similarly snowy action fests "Cliffhanger" and "Die Hard II").

Even though that holds true for Allen, the obvious vocal work of Gene Hackman ("Unforgiven," "Absolute Power") and Sylvester Stallone ("Rocky," "Cliffhanger") is excellent (and who would have thought that of the latter after "Yo, Adrienne!").

The screenplay by John Turman, Michael France ("Cliffhanger") and producer James Schamus ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") initially casts Bruce's inner turmoil as an emotional handicap that explains his broken romance.

To start, Lee and his regular writer James Schamus -- in addition to two other scribblers, Michael France (Cliffhanger, Goldeneye) and John Turman -- have gone to great lengths to scientifically explain the Hulk's origin.

The beginning riffs on Sly Stallone's Cliffhanger: Ace (Jim Carrey) and his raccoon pal are hanging from a rock at a very high altitude when the daffy detective loses his grip on the little paw, and the ill-fated ringtail loses his life.
