If you like the first The Accountant film because it is a spy thriller with a lot of great action, temper your expectations going into The Accountant 2.
Seeing “The Accountant” also gives viewers an explanation for why Christian and Braxton are expert combat fighters. As shown in “The Accountant,” their strict and abusive father (played by Rob Treveiler) was a former U.S. Army officer in psychological operations. When Christian and Braxton were pre-teen children, he forced them to go through rigorous military training that he oversaw entirely himself.
Frankly, the 2016 original wasn’t much of a genre classic. Even after revisiting it, I still found the movie an uneven effort, despite Ben Affleck’s engaging lead performance and the novelty of its premise, centred on a titular autistic accountant who possesses John Wick-like tactical skills in weaponry and martial arts. Not to mention the wonderfully awkward chemistry between Affleck’s Christian Wolff a.k.a. Chris and Anna Kendrick’s Dana Cummings.

Like so many action films of the last 15 years — not to mention all iterations of the Jack Reacher franchise — the Accountant movies are superhero films for audiences who can’t take capes and spandex seriously.
…the rest of the film is fairly decent and much as one would expect from an Equalizer or Reacher.
Not since 1971’s Dirty Harry—a movie I love that espouses a political message I deplore—have we had an action thriller stage its final showdown on a school bus.
…perhaps as close as 2020s Hollywood will ever come to producing a modern-day Dirty Harry without imploding with guilt.
Along with Affleck, they know how to keep Christian grounded so that he still feels like a real human being, and not like a member of the Avengers or something.
All that, plus an Avengers-esque hub of teenage autistic savants using their special abilities to outwit and out-data hunt everyone else.
Moreover, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey (The Avengers, 2014’s Godzilla) ensures we don’t miss a beat, as the timing of the visceral violence is just as on point as all the comedic moments in The Accountant 2.

It’s the rare movie that deserves criticism for not focusing enough on the intricacies of accounting, as the idea of Cartels turning to freelancers to solve their financial problems was a lot more interesting than the knockoff Jason Bourne that Christian was eventually turned into.
The first Accountant was essentially a dumpster remix of the operatic ode to male pain that was O’Connor’s 2011 masterpiece Warrior…
I know Gavin O’Connor’s work from watching Miracle, Warrior, and his post-The Accountant reunion with Ben Affleck, The Way Back.
One area where O’Connor excels: He understands men and their clamped-down emotions. (See his other Affleck collaboration, 2020's "The Way Back," and 2011’s "Warrior" for proof.)
