Nobleman crusader Robin of Locksley breaks out of a Jerusalem prison with the help of Moorish fellow prisoner Azeem and travels back home to England. But upon arrival he discovers his dead father in the ruins of his family estate, killed by the vicious sheriff of Nottingham, Robin and Azeem join forces with outlaws Little John and Will Scarlett to save the kingdom from the sheriff's villainy.

What critics compared Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves to
The script by Affleck, Peter Craig , and Aaron Stockard , based on the novel "Prince of Thieves" by Chuck Hogan , draws less on life than on other, similarly themed movies, especially " The Departed ."
The title of the The Town, which is based on the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan and adapted by Peter Craig, Affleck, and Aaron Stockard (who also worked on Gone Baby Gone, refers to Charlestown, a square-mile neighborhood in Boston that opening title cards inform us is responsible for producing more bank and armored truck robbers than any other place in the United States.
Affleck takes the Clint Eastwood/Kevin Costner/Mel Gibson route by directing and starring in "The Town," a taut adaptation of the Chuck Hogan novel "Prince of Thieves."

It strikes me, too, that this is the film I'd hoped Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was going to be almost thirty years ago.
The closest thing to a fun performance—and it is still a very long distance from actually being that—is the one turned in by Jude Law, who takes a blatantly campy approach to his performance as Vortigern that is basically a ripoff of Alan Rickman’s memorable turn in the otherwise unmemorable “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” that does inspire a laugh or two.
Despite some striking visuals (including sweeping use of Welsh and Scottish locations) and the occasional evocation of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, this newfangled Arthur comes up short on grandeur or even old-fashioned matinee adventure, trading them in for cosmetic Game of Thrones grot.
Nearly every line of dialogue exchanged between William and Tovar is banter so dated it feels lifted out of a ’90s action movie (and not one of the good ones; think “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” – and Damon’s unidentifiable accent is about as convincing in this as Kevin Costner’s was in that).
Through about half of the film, she channels Kevin Costner from “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” attempting a British accent but never quite hitting the mark and then giving up.

Pattinson is having the most fun and like a French (ridiculously) accented Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves , he seems to exist in another film altogether.

Mainly, I was thinking of when Sean Connery showed up in the last five minutes of Kevin Reynolds's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and entire theatres at the time erupted into applause.
Looking more and more like Alan Rickman circa Prince of Thieves , a now-maskless Driver oozes with venom and pathos previously unseen during the majority of Force Awakens .

The most recent big-budget take, Kevin Reynolds' critically-panned blockbuster Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (starring a woefully miscast Kevin Costner), arrived in theaters 19 summers ago, so one could argue it's time to provide the current generation with their own version.
In the end, though, it made me long for the similarly grimy Robin and Marian (1976) and even for 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Yet even the miscast Kevin Costner (in 1991s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) was more fun to watch than Russell Crowe, who gives a technically sound performance that nevertheless is too one-note to stir audiences in the tradition of the best movie heroes.
In fact, the movie is such a fun-killer that it actually makes the Kevin Costner vehicle Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights look good in comparison.
