Missionary Father LaForgue travels to the New World in hopes of converting Algonquin Indians to Catholicism. Accepted, though warily, by the Indians, LaForgue travels with the Indians using his strict Catholic rules and ideals to try and impose his religion.

What critics compared Black Robe to
The depiction of intrepid Jesuits facing death, unspeakable cruelty and myriad hardships reminded me of Roland Joffe’s heavy-handed “The Mission” (1986) and “Black Robe,” Bruce Beresford’s far more brisk and compelling 1991 film of Jesuits making contact with Native American tribes in 17th century Canada.
But “The Revenant” shares DNA with a raft of other movies, from the classic exploration adventure “ Black Robe ” and Terrence Malick’s lyrical odes to the natural world to John Ford’s “The Searchers,” whose narrative of captivity is turned on its head here in a subplot involving a Native American warrior searching for a daughter who’s been kidnapped by a group of French trappers.
He pushes past the grisly frontier brutalities of “Black Robe” and “The Last of the Mohicans,” using the adrenaline of “Predator” and “The Naked Prey.”
I am the first to confess I know little about how people really lived in the first decades of the European settlement of North America, but while I was watching "The Last of the Mohicans," I was haunted by memories of another movie -- " Black Robe " (1991), set in the earliest days of the French settlement of Quebec.
Neither as cuddly as the tribes of "Dances With Wolves" nor as bloodthirsty as those in "Black Robe," they are nevertheless ruthless in combat.
