Rob Reiner, using Woody Allen’s comedies (think Manhattan, Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters) as a springboard, delivers a picture that has much of the humour and only a little of the neurosis of Allen’s work.
The comparisons to "Annie Hall" are inevitable: A couple walking around Manhattan saying pithy things while a jazz song plays in the background.

Quite possibly the greatest romantic comedy since Some Like It Hot, When Harry Met Sally stars Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, and the best faked-orgasm scene ever.
Neither naif nor vamp, she's a woman from a pen of a woman, not some Cinderella of a "Working Girl."
First there was the hilarious spoof of rock documentaries, "This Is Spinal Tap!" followed by the teen comedy "The Sure Thing," the preadolescence drama "Stand By Me" and his biggest hit, the fantasy-comedy "The Princess Bride."
Having already made exceptionally nice romantic movies for kids ("The Princess Bride") and for teens ("The Sure Thing") Reiner now is covering new demographic territory.
Reiner's films include " The Sure Thing ," "Stand by Me," "This Is Spinal Tap!" and " The Princess Bride ."
If Harry is Reiner's alter ego, Sally is another Ephron heroine who gets "Heartburn," but how much more easily she finds the Maalox this time.
If that doesn't sound quite like the Ephron of old (certainly not the Ephron of "Heartburn," which had an undertaste so nasty you could be puckered for a month afterward), it's possibly because Reiner and Billy Crystal, longtime collaborators, reportedly added a good deal themselves during the film making.
The movie was written by Nora Ephron , and could be a prequel to her novel and screenplay " Heartburn ," which starred Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep in the story of a marriage and divorce.
