In one shot, Martin Scorsese will speculate on the life of inanimate objects, like the full-screen smoldering cigarette butt in New York Stories.
While I enjoyed them all to some degree, my favorite by a long shot is “The Concrete Masterpiece,” a delightful meditation of lust, regret and artistic expression that reminded me at times of “Life Lessons,” Martin Scorsese’s brilliant contribution to the anthology project “New York Stories,” and which is the one tale that I would have liked to seen expanded into an entire feature in its own right.
He can only attack villains if he equates them with his mother, who haunts him the way Mae Questel hovered as the monster in Woody Allen’s part of “New York Stories.”
Of the 35 1/3 films (including “Oedipus Wrecks” in “New York Stories”) he has directed, this is the least Woody Allenish of them all.
