And there's such spark mixed with pain in Sessa's young Dustin Hoffman-esque turn (a comparison reinforced when Paul and Angus hit the cinema to see western Little Big Man, which stars Hoffman, and by The Holdovers overall harking back to The Graduate times).
The film’s revisionism was nothing new--both Ralph Nelson and Arthur Penn had turned the tables on western clichés back in 1970 with Soldier Blue and Little Big Man, respectively--but Costner and screenwriter Michael Blake (who adapted his own 1987 novel) reinvigorate the argument with depth of character and a narrative scope that allows for various shades of gray across all perspectives.
"Little Big Man" and "Windwalker" come to mind as examples of movies that treated Indians as multidimensional human beings or used native Indian languages with English subtitles.
Two decades earlier, A Man Called Horse and Little Big Man showed characters attempting to bridge the divide between white American culture and Native American tribalism, but Costner went for broke with his large-scale, Panavision epic, clocking in at three hours.
Like his professional debut, it's another transposition to outer space of the western, specifically countercultural films like A Man Called Horse , Little Big Man and Dances With Wolves , in which the white heroes cross over into the American Indian world and take the side of the supposedly primitive people against the supposedly civilised invaders.
It was later pressed into cinema service as a metaphor for Vietnam, in both neo-Westerns (like “Little Big Man”) and sci-fi (like “Return of the Jedi”).

But for all its anthropological niceties, Iñárritu’s vision of Native Americans traffics in the same noble-savage clichés that render movies like “Dances With Wolves” and “Little Big Man” the regretful fantasies of conquerors.
As it stands, the film directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, is no more impressive than “The Outlaw Josey Wales” or perhaps “Little Big Man.”

“News of the World” is vibrant yet familiar, with its echoes of “The Searchers” and “Little Big Man,” and its best moments are ones we haven’t seen before: A crowd of rapt Texans booing Kidd’s news stories of President Grant — he’s the Devil, as far as they’re concerned — or Johanna calling out to a distant line of vanishing Kiowa to take her home.
To put it mildly, not everyone is Alec Guinness, nor does all the aging makeup rival Dustin Hoffman’s in Little Big Man .
In this cosmic, multi-dimensional, romantic take on "Little Big Man" (the film also resembles "Inception," Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Dark City" and even one scene from Leos Carax's "Pola X"), Jared Leto gives an exceptional performance as a man whose life spins out dependent upon his different choices, leading him to conclude that not making a choice leaves more possibilities.
The old man, played by Jared Leto in heavy Little Big Man makeup, is the last dying person, since everyone else in the future is “quasi-immortal” thanks to triumphs in stem-cell research.
The "Little Big Man" like story shows the trials and tribulations the title equine character, Spirit, must face on his journey to adventure, which should also help plant the seeds of imagination in the older kids.

"It's a good day to die!" Kiefer Sutherland announces, with a mean-crazy look, in the first scene; obviously he's just been watching "Little Big Man."
Such moments express no little respect—and sympathy—for those trapped in circumstances caused by policies framed by outsiders, but they also allow—through Lambert’s eyes—a measure of exasperation as well as commiseration, and even a few fleeting moments of humor that might lead to you think back on the portrayal of the tribe in “Little Big Man.”
