The White Sheik (1952)

In Italy, small-town newlyweds Wanda and Ivan Cavalli embark on their honeymoon in the big city of Rome. Ivan dutifully wants to keep appointments with family and church, but Wanda is only interested in meeting her favorite photo-strip star known as "The White Sheik". While Wanda impetuously sneaks away to locate the object of her affections, disconsolate Ivan tries his hardest to keep up appearances with the couple's relatives.

This new production combines the free form and make-believe splendor of those two films with the comic, bittersweet feeling for character and narrative we remember from some of his best films of the nineteen-fifties—"Variety Lights," "The White Sheik," "I Vitelloni" and "Nights of Cabiria."
(The only Fellini movie that's about as pleasurable is The White Sheik.)
The first film Federico Fellini ("La Strada"/" I Vitelloni"/"8½") directed solo (he codirected Variety Lights with Alberto Lattuada in 1951) is a pleasing sitcom-like comedy and clever lighthearted spoof on movie stars; it's written by Michelangelo Antonioni and Fellini.
