As if the years-too-late notion of making a sequel to Jim Carrey's "The Mask" wasn't a bad enough idea all by itself, the kiddie-targeted comedy "Son of the Mask" is a transparently minimal effort in which many jokes and pivotal plot points are grossly inappropriate for children.
You wouldn't know it, though, from "Son of the Mask," the anemic sequel to the 1994 Jim Carrey vehicle, "The Mask," in which Kennedy is forced to play second fiddle to a computer-animated dog and a baby who urinates like Old Faithful.
It is superior to 2001's similar "Cats & Dogs" while falling short of the "Stuart Little" flicks.
This is to say that “A Dog’s Purpose” is more faux philosophical “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and “Cats & Dogs” than Rin Tin Tin or Lassie.
The thing that’s so excruciating about films like “Garfield: The Movie,” “Cats & Dogs,” “Beverly Hills Chiuahua,” or the new “ Nine Lives ” — starring Kevin Spacey as the voice of a disgruntled kitty cat named Mister Fuzzypants; are you tumbling out of your chair with laughter yet?
He’s not the guy they got to helm ordinary crap like Cats & Dogs -- he’s the guy they got to helm the followup megacrap, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.
