…battle with the title character that recalls, in its celebrity sports gimmickry, Bruce Lee's bout with basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in "Game of Death" (1972).
Tyson’s presence is akin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar showing up in Bruce Lee’s “Game of Death” — less a matter of “Why?” than “Why not?”
There is precedent for this, as Lee fought Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in his last, unfinished film, Game of Death (1972).

With his elaborate facial tattoo and sparse, half-English, half-Cantonese dialogue, Tyson doesn’t exactly disappear into his small but central role – nor does his presence in 1959 Hong Kong make much sense – but he justifies his distracting presence during an appropriately intense fight with Ip Man that favourably calls to mind the sparring between Bruce Lee and another iconic American athlete, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, in Game of Death.
Both Ip Man’s fight scene with a prominent American sports legend and the film’s most melodramatic plot development conjure up memories of Lee’s “Game of Death”.
From hundreds of movies based around Wong Fei Hung, including the Once Upon A Time In China series, Drunken Master and Iron Monkey films to accounts of Huo Yuanjia (Fearless) and San Te (36th Chamber Of Shaolin) , the references are too numerous to mention, but always dealt with in varying degrees of, shall we say, ‘looseness’ when it comes to facts.
Bruce Lee has Enter the Dragon , Jackie Chan has the Drunken Master , Jet Li has Once Upon a Time in China (both different takes on the same character) and now Donnie Yen can add his name to the list of memorable films with Ip Man.
But the real disappointment is the depiction of the Japanese as villians: all one-dimensional and straight out of a 40s US comic-book, they’re reminiscent of the sort of portrayal we’d have been used to in the films of the early 80s films like The Postman Fights Back and Fist Of Legend (itself a Fist Of Fury makeover).
This kind of general story outline will be familiar to fans of the martial arts genre whose films such as Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury and Jet Li’s Fist of Legend in 1994 are very often propelled by the feeling of Chinese nationalistic pride and no wonder considering the endless tyrannical savagery that the Japanese people inflicted throughout Chinese history.
20 years later, Jet Li would star in a very similar movie called Fist of Legend (1994).

It's easy to watch it and get the feel of an old Shaw Brothers movie, or Jet Li's "Once Upon a Time in China" series.
But I, for one, have always preferred the more traditional genre films that just let the martial arts style speak for itself such as the Once Upon a Time in China films and the recent Fearless and Ip Man is one of the most rousing to come along in a while.

Sword of Destiny , the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), bows on Netflix on Feb. 26, and he’s part of the cast of a little something called Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , which you may be hearing about come Christmas.
That's a lot of fighting, choreographed this time by Yuen Woo-ping, famous for his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the Matrix trilogy.
However, that’s not so surprising given the choreographer, Yuen Woo-Ping (the real hero of the movie), is the mind behind the movement in The Matrix , Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon .

Yip’s aesthetics are more muted and traditional than those of well-known florid imports Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Korea’s Man From Nowhere, Paul Greengrass’s Bourne movies, Christopher Nolan’s Batman, Donnie Yen’s Sha Po Lang and Flashpoint, Tony Jaa’s Ong Bak films which have progressively jettisoned their humor until all that remains is two men beating the crap out of each other.
He finally swallows his pride to work at the coal mines despite not having the right clothes to wear for the job (echoes here of Russell Crowe’s Jim Braddock during the Great Depression from Cinderella Man).
You may remember Sammo from his Rush Hour -like TV series Martial Law that ran during the late ’90’s.
The “Ip Man” actor and Wing Chu grandmaster gives off “Kung Fu” vibes as a young Master Po, the Shaolin temple priest who trained David Carradine’s character, also named Caine,” in the 1972 television series.
But the most charismatic addition to the Wick universe is Hong Kong MMA master Donnie Yen, star of the phenomenally successful Ip Man movies (and veteran of such US films as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ).
Aside from Reeves’ endearingly exhausted presence (he’s both demon and cursed ghost), John Wick: Chapter 4 also benefits hugely from the addition of martial-arts master Donnie Yen (probably known to Western audiences from Rogue One, but also the star of the Ip Man series and others in China).
Whereas Parabellum featured Iron Chef America’s chairman (Mark Dacascos) in a hammy role, the new movie boasts martial artist Donnie Yen (controversial star of the Ip Man series) as a skilled assassin, B-movie action hero Scott Adkins as a seedy German gangster in a fat suit, and likable newcomer Shamier Anderson as a bounty hunter with a loyal dog—a considerable upgrade.
The fights include such noted martial arts actors as Donnie Yen (the “Ip Man” movies) Hiroyuki Sanada (The Twilight Samurai) and Scott Adkins (Ip Man 4: The Finale).
And because he really wants the job done, he has chosen a particularly formidable henchman to do away with Wick once and for all: the suave and unruffled Caine, played by action star Donnie Yen (of the Ip Man movies), is an ace marksman—who also happens to be blind.
(At least something seems to have rubbed off from Ang Lee’s wonderful Lust, Caution .)
That trend seemed to have diminished in the face of overdone stylizations of martial arts such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers (both directed by Zhang Yimou).
Forget the overhyped Ong Bak , think no more of the bloated Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , and if you have Kill Bill on the tip of your tongue right now, swallow those words and hang your head in shame.
