With all this in place, the script, by newcomers Jeff and Craig Cox, glides through the typical sports movie tropes with mixed success: the bitter rivalry, the training montage and of course the secret weapon - in this case a ridiculous feat of skatesmanship called the Iron Lotus (fans of that classic Rodney Dangerfield comedy "Back to School" will immediately recall the "Triple Lindy").
There are some slight downfalls of the film such as the ineffective father-daughter subplot that is not properly fleshed out and Kevin Costner is wasted in a role that’s almost akin to William Fichtner’s part in Blades of Glory.
With its frilly, glittered unitards and grave disposition, figure skating is so close to self-parody that it doesn't take much to turn a film about the sport into uproarious comedy — just look at the accidentally hilarious drama "The Cutting Edge" (1992).
Ferrell plays alcoholic sex addict Chazz Michael Michaels, an über-macho cross between Jim Morrison, a taller, doughier Elvis Stojko and one of the Hanson brothers from "Slap Shot."
Will Ferrell, with those dots of eyes furrowed into mean slits, is Chazz Michael Michaels, Jimmy's butch counterpart a pudgy, cantankerous ruffian who skates with cowboy/bruiser/Saturday Night Fever moves that are, if anything, just a bit less ridiculous than Jimmy's peacock posing.
Evolutionary biologist Casey Bracket (Olivia Munn, Office Christmas Party) encounters a predator in a secret government lab, it unsurprisingly gets loose, and so she teams up with McKenna and a crew of post-traumatic stress-suffering ex-soldiers.
As Eddie/Dolph Lundgren, Nick Swardson's (2007's " Blades of Glory ") efforts fall more flat than not.
Here are the people who populate the film: Will Arnett ( Arrested Development ), Amy Poehler ( Saturday Night Live Upright Citizens Brigade ), Jenna Fischer ( The Office ), Craig T. Nelson (um...he was good in The Incredibles ?) and cameos by Rob Corddry and Andy Richter.
On they go, picking up Paul (T.J. Miller, Office Christmas Party ), buried in rubble, along the way, before catching up with the captain (Vincent Cassel, The Emperor of Paris ) and two others, played by Jessica Henwick (Netflix’s Iron Fist ) and John Gallagher Jr. ( 10 Cloverfield Lane ).
Though the film marks the official launch of an expansive Netflix holiday slate that also includes sequels to Vanessa Hudgens’ cheesy romance The Princess Switch and Kurt Russell’s family adventure The Christmas Chronicles , Holidate is more in line with the bawdy ethos of Office Christmas Party or A Bad Moms Christmas —at least until it fully embraces the rom-com hokiness it lampoons at the start.
Still, the movie struck me as unreal and vaguely ridiculous — a sort of “Blades of Glory” with drums instead of ice skates.
