What critics compared Slap Shot to
Gritty, blue-collar US sports films were a genre unto themselves in the 1970s, from John Huston's 1972 boxing melodrama Fat City to Sylvester Stallone's 1976 breakthrough role in Rocky and the vastly underrated hockey flick Slap Shot with Paul Newman in 1977.
Ferrell plays alcoholic sex addict Chazz Michael Michaels, an über-macho cross between Jim Morrison, a taller, doughier Elvis Stojko and one of the Hanson brothers from "Slap Shot."
From this initial set-up, the film expands into a bunch of interconnected moments that progressively shed light onto the inner workings of "Large" in carefully constructed, but carefree feeling manner, much in the way that the characters in classic '70s films like Slap Shot gradually unfolded before the audience in a quasi-linear way.
