Connections, in both directions
With the exception of Trachtenberg, who became a child star with the 1996 Nickelodeon comedy Harriet the Spy and was later a recurring character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they were all picked from relative obscurity to appear in the film.
Most of the rejected names were lazy riffs on recent teen hits (40 Days Abroad, What a Frau Wants) as was the title they eventually plumped for, a simple play on 2000’s Road Trip that might imply a connection without explicitly stating it, just as Boat Trip had done two years earlier.
Existing in a void where Road Trip and Old School are the virtual Adam and Eve of movie creation, EuroTrip represents the latest pestilence from DreamWorks’s subterranean id-grinder.
Despite the fact that the posters proclaim Eurotrip to be “From the people who brought you Road Trip”, it isn’t, strictly speaking, a sequel – the ‘people’ in question are the producers rather than the stars or the director or writers.
Hoppykins is of course as much fun as ever (especially when he’s ‘channeling’ demons and doing all sorts of fabulous accent work) but newcomer Colin O’Donoghue can’t really hold his own, however much he looks like Scott Mechlowicz from Eurotrip.
Since then, all three have written, directed and produced several episodes of hit HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm and are set to return to the big screen next year as co-writers with Sacha Baron Cohen on his political satire The Dictator.
Thankfully, the underlying intelligence of his usual offerings also remains, with the film’s script – co-written by Cohen with EuroTrip trio Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer – mostly smart and snappy as well as obscene.
Cohen co-wrote the film with Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer – the minds behind the criminally underrated Eurotrip – which is evident in the alternating mix of witty (sometimes scathing) satirical humor, and lowbrow slapstick/ potty humor.
The multiple-author screenplay, by Cohen and the three who co-wrote "EuroTrip," is a mix of comic bombshells and conventional plot devices that add up to an entertaining goof.
These words, of course, foreshadow both the meltdown of teammate Fisher (Jacob Pitts, "EuroTrip"), who, jealous of Ben's top dog status, acts ridiculously out of character calling the attention of casino guards, and Ben himself, high on the assorted high rolling personas he's adopted.
(The incestuous twins footnote makes me think that perhaps EuroTrip‘s only purpose in this world is as a primer for Bernardo Bertolucci’s enticing The Dreamers .)
"Eurotrip" doesn't tug at the heartstrings like "There's Something About Mary," nor does it have a big comic hook (read: hair gel), but it does have several ambitious set pieces, including Vinnie Jones' fiery binge as a soccer hooligan and Scott's slow-motion, kung-fu battle with a French street mime.
