"Critical" Analysis: Fifty Shades of Grey is an episode of Red Shoe Diaries with a major studio budget.
But it’s also too flawed to recommend — much of the dialogue is irredeemably goofy, the sex scenes are straight out of Red Shoe Diaries, Dornan is a cipher, and the slicked-up portrait of the lives of the rich is straight out of an early-‘90s Michael Douglas movie (not one, but two sequences amount to flying porn).
If the picture's trashier elements appeal to you, pass on "Unfaithful" and rent "Red Shoe Diaries" (the pilot for a 1992 Showtime series with David Duchovny and Brigitte Bako) which connects with its characters on a visceral level and is dead sexy to boot.
Like Zalman King with "Delta of Venus," sometimes soft-porn purveyor Jean-Claude Brisseau has something more than sex on his mind here.

But here, he gives the kind of performance that reminds us why he was so well-regarded in the early stages of his career — back when he was making movies such as "Diner" (1982) and "The Pope of Greenwich Village" (1984), rather than his later turns in exploitative trash such as "Wild Orchid" (1989), "Spun" (2002) and "Domino" (2005).
Best remembered for his breakout in Diner and his slinky magnetism in the films that followed ( Nine ½ Weeks , Wild Orchid ), he made some noise in the early 1990s about the innate girliness of the acting profession and retired, for a time, to the boxing ring.
