Four decades ago, there was a terrific British end-of-the-world thriller, Val Guest's 1962 "The Day the Earth Caught Fire," which packed in almost twice as much character, social detail and honest tension as "28 Days"--and also seemed on fire with a good idea: an attack on the Cold War arms race.
(In fact, she's so forgettable that all I kept wondering was whether Brown had been thinking of Victoria Vetri, the B-movie star of "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth.")
Huge and featuring an enormous cast of all-stars, Casino Royale has intermittent laughs amid crazy set-pieces and a great Burt Bacharach score, to boot.
Although it was no Cleopatra, Casino Royale cost a considerable sum of money to produce in 1966, its final cost ballooning to twice its original budget due to delays, egos, and freewheeling expenditures.
After an American spacecraft crashes in Malaysia (shades of the classic The Quatermass Xperiment ) and some ‘samples’ are retrieved by representatives of unethical zillionaire Carlton Drake (chilly Riz Ahmed), we then meet San Francisco journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy), a popular, pushy type engaged to lawyer Anne Weying (Michelle Williams, with more to do than you at first think).

Everything is dark and overgrown with foliage, and the familiar “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth” banner still lies in tatters on the floor.
Most of the flick follows British secret agent Colin Cain (Peter Firth) and American astronaut Tom Carlson (Steve Railsback) as they try to locate the gorgeous naked vampiress by tracking her freshest victims, and that's where Lifeforce flips and goes from Alien to Dracula to The Quatermass Xperiment.
In a way, this follows a through line from the original Casino Royale with David Niven - it’s a knockabout cash-in.
