(Subjective facts, but still…) The only exceptions to the rule are the Bourne trilogy and the first four (!) films in Jackie Chan’s Police Story film series.
Prepare for brawls, eye gouging, knife fights, more shattered glass than Jackie Chan’s “Police Story”, and why not a horse chase for a good measure.
The dust-ups, and they are frequent and grisly, are magnificently orchestrated by director Chad Stahelski and his stunt team, shattering more glass than Jackie Chan’s Police Story and throwing in a horse chase that makes the one in True Lies look like a tame trot.

The drawings truly come alive during the fantastical action scenes; a couple of swashbuckling sequences outdo all four Pirates of the Caribbean movies and a ‘long-take’ chase through the streets of Morocco combines the best elements of Indiana Jones and Police Story into a truly transcendent, Spielbergian cinematic moment.
“Bad Boys II,” a callous low point for early 21st century studio movies, told the story of how Jackie Chan’s far superior “Police Story” managed to wreck a hillside village inhabited by poverty-stricken extras for laughs, and succeeded.

"Rogue Nation" feels like it could’ve been a movie by Keaton’s most fervent disciple, Jackie Chan , who gifted the human race with the likes of "Project A" and "Supercop."
As in, there is a lot of Jackie Chan’s Armour of God and Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure in the fun, loud, but oddly immemorable Red Notice, the second in Netflix’s run of Reynolds' fight-and-flight flicks after the equally forgettable 6 Underground.
Bay has Smith shooting with a gun in each hand, a la Chow Yun-Fat; a creative twist on the car/truck sequences in "Tokyo Raiders" and "The Transporter"; bullet-time tracking; and a rumble through dilapidated Cuban shacks that�s suspiciously like Jackie Chan careening through a tenement at the beginning of "Police Story."
The cover for their sting operation is blown, and it turns into a massive gunfight that culminates with a car barreling down the hill through numerous buildings as explosions go off left and right (if this sounds familiar, Michael Bay lifted it wholesale for 2003’s Bad Boys II).
This sequence was later homaged in a big way by Bad Boys II , but certainly not topped.
Perhaps most notable about this sequence is the car chase down a hill, which demolishes the entire village in the process – an explosive, memorable stunt that is completely stolen by “Bad Boys II” many years later, to a shocking degree.

The ensuing brawl (incorporating the bus’ seats, poles, and—in one ingenious bit of comic timing—the signal cord) has the complexity, energy, and inventiveness of the great Jackie Chan (Rumble in the Bronx, Police Story)—as well as a bit of Spider-Man flair in the way Shang-Chi protects the other passengers while fending off his assailants.
The first half of the film is the more satisfying, with some wild slapstick chases and fight sequences, the most memorable taking place in a clock tower where Chan pays homage to both Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" and Harold Lloyd's "Safety Last" in the same scene.
This story — co-written by original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Michael Green — is a soul-searching "Who am I?" journey, but the film's tensions are more akin to a mechanistic puzzle than an emotional web.

Fight coordinator Jon Valera ( Creed II ) and stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio ( John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ) nail the realistic, yet unconventional nature of comic book violence by employing techniques and styles that ground the mayhem in ways more commonly seen in Jackie Chan films like Police Story and Rumble in the Bronx where household items and objects around you become weapons of destruction in capable hands.
Spike, let’s face it, invented the black superhero origin story with MALCOLM X, a film that tells us how Malcolm Little discovered the answer to the question, “Who am I?” Lee’s film concludes with schoolchildren declaring one after another, resolutely, “I AM MALCOLM X.”
The Oliver Stone who put Charlie Sheen on the terrace of a New York City apartment and had him ask "Who am I?" to the dawn.
More often, it’s a preamble to the big show: think, for instance, of Jules’s unloading Ezekiel 25:17 before he unloads his clip in Pulp Fiction ; Robert De Niro cutting short Bridget Fonda’s mocking prattle with an abrupt gunshot in Jackie Brown ; the long, aimless arias of girl talk before the action set pieces of Death Proof , or the “Who Am I?” drinking game that precedes the Mexican standoff in the tavern basement in Inglourious Basterds .
"Heat," from the Michael Mann who created "Miami Vice" and "Police Story," as well as "Thief," "Manhunter" and "Last of the Mohicans," is exactly what you might expect, only a lot better: A big, fat, full-tilt boogie, rockin', rollin' heavy metal concert for outlaws, outlaw wannabes, macho sentimentalists and gun cranks -- everyone who's ever felt a dribble of testosterone in his or her endocrine system.
