Inevitable comparisons can be drawn with Terry Zwigoff's 2003 movie "Bad Santa."
Taking the "Bad Santa" skew to the classroom, Cameron Diaz is the "Bad Teacher" of the title, a rotten apple of an educator if ever there was one.
The bulk of Bad Teacher isn't so subversive – Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg's script is basically Bad Santa's public-school analog – but it is consistently funny.
The game plan of “ Bad Teacher ” is quite simple – create a middle school variant on “ Bad Santa .”

The result combines the slacker graphic-novel vibe of "Ghost World," the inside-the-video-game conceit of "Tron" and the martial-arts exuberance of "Kung Fu Hustle," as if shaken and stirred by Quentin Tarantino.
At times, it may remind you of other films adapted from graphic novels (notably Ghost World), and even of Wes Anderson, but it's got a madly clever and playful let's-try-it-on prankishness all its own.

That fits its origins as a graphic novel, and as girl-centric adaptations go, this is right up there with Ghost World and We Are the Best! (from Sweden’s Lukas and Coco Moodysson).
Like Ghost World and Persepolis before it, The Diary of a Teenage Girl’s grace in transitioning mediums is second only to its wisdom in transcending experiences.

Like “Ghost World” and “Heathers,” other movies aimed at smart girls and their older sisters, Craig’s film will find its cult following as its audience catches up with it.
The Edge of Seventeen may not be embraced by John Hughes nostalgists, but Steinfeld's Nadine is a direct descendant of Molly Ringwald's Samantha in Sixteen Candles — as well as of the marginalized heroines played by Winona Ryder in Heathers , Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You , Thora Birch in Ghost World and many others.
Craig owes a lot to the works of John Hughes and movies like Ghost World and Mean Girls , but she still puts a very personal spin on the genre, and Steinfeld gives a fantastic performance that matches up to her breakout turn in True Grit .

Plot
If the film is at all autobiographical, maybe writer/director Gavin Wiesen is remembering seeing 2008's " The Wackness ," where an unpopular kid at a Manhattan prep school whose parents are undergoing financial difficulties meets the girl of his dreams with a highly improper parent or 2006's " Art School Confidential ," where the protagonist's deluded sense of self nearly derails him, all, of course, while chasing the girl of his dreams.
Segel and Diaz have reunited here with director Jake Kasdan, who all worked together on Bad Teacher, which was itself a Bad Santa ripoff set in middle school.
