Based on the 2017 novel by actress Robinne Lee, The Idea of You expands on the burgeoning cottage industry of film based on lightly-disguised fan fiction of One Direction’s Harry Styles. Where the five-movie After series — released between 2019 and 2023, based on a series of 2014-15 novels — features international college student Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), The Idea of You has the more straightforwardly Styles-esque Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), a 24-year-old English heartthrob who ostensibly leads the boy band August Moon.
An appealing Josephine Langford ( Wish Upon , Wolf Creek ) plays the central role of Tessa, a fresh-faced teen who at the story's beginning is starting her first year at college.
Josephine Langford of “Wolf Creek” and “Wish Upon” is Tessa, whom we meet as she’s delivered to Atlanta’s Rossmore University by her helicopter divorced mom (Selma Blair) and still-in-high-school beau Noah (Dylan Arnold).
But it is fluff, especially when compared to the great run of story-strong teen films we’ve had this decade, including Eighth Grade, Lady Bird, Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, The Duff, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Diary of a Teenage Girl and The Spectacular Now (to name a few).

But long gone are the wicked romps from the 1990s like “Wild Things” or “Cruel Intentions,” now everyone sends threats via text and sex itself isn’t portrayed as edgy, but as a routine motion.
Instead, After ’s “troubled bad boy meets earnest good girl” story feels like the latest riff on the dynamics that fueled Twilight and Fifty Shades Of Grey , the latter of which started as fan fiction of the former.
Never does it dare get as risqué as “Fifty Shades of Grey,” a pity, but it’s also not necessarily a bore either.
Compared to other fanfiction-turned-film like Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey, Susan Martin’s adaptation of Anna Todd’s novel of the same name is more in line with Riverdale or The CW teenage phenomena of glossy, fantastical scenarios.

Based on Anna Todd’s best-selling novel and an abundance of YA melodrama (see: Five Feet Apart), the days of She’s All That, 10 Things I Hate About You and/or A Walk to Remember seem like long ago days.
The fruit comes in the attractive form of Carlin (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin), a brooding, laconic James Dean clone who wears an old-school black leather jacket, brandishes a British accent (thus making him a touch exotic) and is a lover of classic romantic literature such as Pride & Prejudice , Wuthering Heights and The Great Gatsby (thus giving him depth).
That’s perhaps unsurprising, given that Hardin’s supposed literary prowess is established by the line, “ The Great Gatsby , that’s a good book.”

Brief appearances from Selma Blair and Peter Gallagher are ghosts of teen drama past, reminders of what intriguing, thoughtful stories used to look like (Cruel Intentions and The OC, respectively).
The movie, starring British actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin (you may remember him as young Voldemort, Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ) and Josephine Langford as Tessa Young, the romantic protagonist who finds herself enamored with Scott’s seemingly oafish charm, came out April 12.

I Still Love You explores the sexuality of Lara Jean, much like other YA classics that came before it, the film also offers a refreshing break from similar teenage romance stories (like Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series and Netflix’s 2019 adaptation of Anna Todd’s 2014 novel After ) that use the lead up to a young protagonist’s “first time” to send them through both emotional and psychological turmoil.
