As for the mention of this London neighborhood, it brings up the automatic thought of 1999's Notting Hill, amongst the few other movies in the rom-com genre to explore a romance through a lens in which one of the people in the relationship is world-famous (unfortunately, Marry Me tried to rip off this concept with much less success).
The Idea of You may, at first, appear like the run-of-the-mill streaming romance movie—guess again. The film does possess some of those cheesy, simple qualities, like a gonzo premise and a handful of hokey dialogue. But this isn’t a copy-paste, low-budget romantic comedy; this stand-out is the most pleasant surprise since 2018’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Based on the 2017 novel by actress Robinne Lee, The Idea of You expands on the burgeoning cottage industry of film based on lightly-disguised fan fiction of One Direction’s Harry Styles. Where the five-movie After series — released between 2019 and 2023, based on a series of 2014-15 novels — features international college student Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), The Idea of You has the more straightforwardly Styles-esque Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), a 24-year-old English heartthrob who ostensibly leads the boy band August Moon.
