Filmmakers attempting to break into the teen drama / romance genre seem destined to fail, mostly because of the candid authenticity of movies that came before like “The Fault in Our Stars” and “The Spectacular Now.” Whereas these films get almost everything right where coming-of-age adolescent angst is concerned, the plot for “Everything, Everything” feels like it’s filled with a watered-down insincerity.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014) was such a huge hit that you knew other sick teen romantic dramas would follow, even if you were unaware of what books were out there to inspire the screenplays.
It’s lacking the star-studded cast of “The Fault in Our Stars,” though Stenberg and Robinson are charming and comfortable onscreen.
Well, it’s been around for some time with movies like “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “A Walk to Remember,” and “The Space Between Us.” Now we get EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING, and teenagers who have no interest in “Alien: Covenant” this weekend can go to this and have a good cry.
“The Fault in Our Stars” meets “Room” in “Everything, Everything,” a confounding psychological drama masquerading as a cutesy teen love story.
Quite obviously appealing to the same crowd that flocked to see “The Fault in Our Stars” or “Me and Early and the Dying Girl,” “Everything, Everything” does everything in its power to the win the sympathies of its audience.

This isn’t a performance in the vein of Hailee Steinfeld’s turn of The Edge of Seventeen , where a young girl’s neuroses are on display without filters.
Nowadays, the closest equivalents to those films (such as Todd Haynes' Carol) tend to be relegated to the art house, where their makers often embrace a pictorial, trance-y aesthetic.
He looks a lot like the imaginary boyfriend Riley dreams up in 2015’s “Inside Out,” and shows similar dramatic development.
