Oh, you know what happens next — at least if you grew up on old-school sci-fi like "2001" and "Colossus: The Forbin Project."
A similar plot about artificial intelligence taking over the world was first presented over 40 years ago in 1970 in Colossus: The Forbin Project, a film that ended with two supercomputers communicating with one another and then controlling everything at fade out.
From this moment on, the film recklessly melds scenarios from sci-fi milestones like “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and every computer-run-wild movie from “Colossus: The Forbin Project” to “Demon Seed.”
And, like in “Colossus: The Forbin Project,” does the computer have a sinister agenda as it links with the world’s technology?
And there are additional twists that link the movie to everything from “Frankenstein” to “Colossus: The Forbin Project” to “The Terminal Man,” “The Matrix” and even last year’s artificial-intelligence love story “Her.”
While Transcendence has tons of money to spend on unpersuasive digital effects and dronelike music, it shows little interest in exploring the potentially tricky benefits of a computer-enhanced intellect; it’s not even in the enjoyable realm of starkly ridiculous Cold War thrillers like Colossus: The Forbin Project.

(Compared to Ava from “Ex Machina,” Skynet looks as outdated and old-school as anything in 1970’s “Colossus: The Forbin Project.”)
The Great White stars of the Jawsiad quickly ceased to resemble any beasts found in nature — they were bringing down helicopters as early as 1978's Jaws 2. But even Jaws: The Revenge ("This time, it's personal") looks like Gorillas in the Mist compared to the 21st century made-for-Syfy-shark-portmanteau plague, which asserts that camp is a thing you can engineer the way the scientists in 1999's Deep Blue Sea engineered sharks with ape-level intelligence.
Last year, he remade that classic 1974 heist flick, “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three,” to mixed results.

A pastiche of classic plot devices scrounged from The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Conversation, Blue Velvet, and dozens of other movies, the story often feels familiar, but director Anderson (The Machinist) has such a flair for suspense that even the most jaded viewers will find themselves in a sweat.
Building the mood out of spare parts from westerns and cop movies from the 1970s (the charging score by Mark Mothersbaugh is a distant cousin to David Shire’s work on “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three”), the filmmaker maintains a steady pace of evasion, keeping Luke and Mei on the run as they figure out a master plan of survival, with the ex-cop firing up his protective instincts to ensure that his young charge remains unharmed and her mental parcel is handled with care.

It takes both talent and intelligence to remain a Hollywood icon into your 70's, but it's hard not to wonder if Dirty Grandpa isn't De Niro's Jaws 4, the latter being a film that star Michael Caine acknowledged as being dreadful yet also a film that he's quick to acknowledge bought him a very nice house.
Kaulder now lives in New York, and is handled/aided by the 36th member of a line of priests (Michael Caine, because the house that Jaws: The Revenge built must have needed a guest wing) in hunting and incarcerating witches in the surrounding area.

Nor can the somewhat surprising appearance of Michael Caine, though this is the man who appeared in "Jaws: The Revenge," so slumming is nothing new for him.
Merge the hyper-stylized combat sequences from "The Matrix" with headier elements from sci-fi's "Colossus: The Forbin Project," add a crimson splash of David Cronenberg's "Videodrome" and you'd roughly get "Upgrade."
