Co-written by Diane Ruggerio, Rob Thomas's sharply written screenplay is evident, especially from the quippy one-liners traded by Veronica with others with running narration by Veronica completing the central noir conceit along with the shadowy lighting - although let's be honest that this idea was generally done better in Rian Johnson's debut "Brick."
Think of it as the flip side of VERONICA MARS, which uses hip patter and an ironic tone in following the adventures of Kristen Bell’s teenage gumshoe.
You may not have seen Veronica Mars during its TV heyday, but you may be familiar with the similarly themed Brick, Rian Johnson’s first film that’s also a sun kissed teen tribute to Marlowe and Hammett.
After a brief prologue meant to familiarize newcomers with the show’s premise and three years of abbreviated plot, delivered as usual by Veronica (Kristen Bell) in voiceover designed to recall the first-person narration of hardboiled detective pulp (though not to the extent of “Brick”), we’re reintroduced to the heroine ten years after her high school graduation.
But like Al Pacino in “The Godfather: Part III” (as if), Veronica is recalled to the “seedy beach town” and “iniquitous hell hole” of her California youth when Logan is accused of the murder of girlfriend and former Neptune High student Bishop.
Previous examples like Joss Whedon’s Serenity, giving closure to prematurely cancelled Firefly, or Dead Like Me: After Death, a follow-up to Bryan Fuller’s quirky Showtime series, never really worked for me.

But there’s also been a weird back and forth between the two mediums as well, including TV shows based on movies, movies based on TV shows and even the occasional extension of a series into a film sequel, with shows like “Star Trek,” “Firefly,” “Sex and the City,” “The X-Files” and “Veronica Mars” all spawning cinematic offshoots after their finales.
