One of the film's final images is a half-lift from the somewhat kitschy William Cameron Menzies -directed classic " Invaders From Mars ," which exploits childhood trauma in a way that surely inspired Breathed's vision.
It's a film packed to bursting with golden nuggets of surprise, humor, and pathos, though it bears noting that the film runs a track vaguely similar to Spielberg's E.T.. That's not to say in any way that Bird's film is a simulacrum; both films owe a great deal to the classic sci-fi films of the Fifties, notably William Cameron Menzies' Invaders From Mars and Jack Arnold's It Came From Outer Space (both 1953 and both referenced in Bird's film).
The movie's production never touched down in Africa itself (it was largely shot in Atlanta and in South Korea), but the simulation presented here has an exotic fantasy glow, with the skyscrapers and elevated trains of the cleverly obscured Wakanda recalling the studio-born wonders of the 1936 futurist classic Things to Come .
(It recalls the futuristic metropolis of the 1936 Things to Come .)
The last two narrative strands, in some ways the most conventional, are science-fiction tales set in different dystopian futures that recall HG Wells's The Time Machine and the 1936 film of his Things to Come.
