What critics say influenced Escape Room: Tournament of Champions
The film – it seemed to me – owed a lot to the 1997 cult smash Cube .
Escape Room was one-part Saw and one-part Cube, an innovative series of thrilling set-pieces that transcended its modest premise and January release date.
Something else worth mentioning is that, of course, it makes sense to discuss both the Cube or Saw series in relation to both Escape Room films, but what I thought was interesting is that because part of the focus in Tournament of Champions is the trauma that those who have survived Minos’ game must live with, there were aspects of the sequel that almost felt more in line with something you’d see in a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, simply because you never know if you can trust what you’re seeing unfolding in front of you.
Escape Room - David Fincher's The Game via 80s ITV favourite 3-2-1 - was among the box office surprises of 2019, taking over $155 million on a $9 million budget.
It’s essentially the same premise as Catching Fire where these veterans of a deadly competition gotta do the same shit to survive again, yet it manages to give you that same sense of panic and fright that keeps you on your toes throughout.
If that sounds more than a little Hunger Games , the comparisons continue into Tournament Of Champions , which pitches the pair back into the game, this time with the same ‘All Stars’ set-up as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire .
