Interestingly enough, there are parallels to Lars von Trier’s highly divisive film, 2009’s Antichrist (which I quite like), but without the provocation and exaggerated scenes.
Rather like Jennifer Ehle’s diva in Saint Maud, Veronica is stylish and forthright; red-lipped, be-turbaned in velvet, and bedecked with a fine line in vintage furs.
It brings an unusual mix of being dark yet playful, almost as if you blended A Cure for Wellness , The Other Lamb and Coraline , the latter mostly being because of its use of music and that playful edge.
The meaning of the land is bleak and tragic, where women were at the hands of cruelty, but director Colbert and cinematographer Jamie Ramsay really bring an elegant and tactile nature to every frame with some truly stunning camerawork (fans of “A Cure for Wellness” and all of its visual splendor will recognize a very similar shot aboard the Landwasser Viaduct train).
It’s a strangely accomplished cast with excellent actors appearing on screen for scant seconds in roles that anyone could have filled – like Amy Manson (see 2019’s Run for proof) or Olwen Fouéré ( The Survivalist ).
