Anne, a brilliant and dedicated advocacy lawyer specialising in society’s most vulnerable, children and young adults, lives what appears to be the picture-perfect life with her doctor-husband, Peter, and their twin daughters. When her estranged teenage stepson, Gustav, moves in with them, Anne’s escalating desire leads her down a dangerous rabbit hole which, once exposed, unleashes a sequence of events destined to destroy her world.

Providing echoes of Douglas Sirk melodramas and Hitchcockian thrillers, the film ultimately feels like a subtle addition to those hot button Michael Douglas morality tales that proved such commercial juggernauts in the late 1980s and early 1990sl Fatal Attraction , Disclosure etc.The box-office response to Queen of Hearts might not be in the same league as those, but it has a similar ability to make emotions churn and blood boil.
Given that her eventual actions call to mind those of Glenn Close’s ’round-the-bend vengefulness in Fatal Attraction, this may not go down well in some “woke” quarters at the moment, but there’s no denying the filmmaker’s narrative command and the ever-accruing force of her story.

The first half of Queen of Hearts approaches the conduct between an older woman and a much younger man much like author Doris Lessing’s The Grandmothers which was adapted into the sensational film called Adore by Anne Fontaine.
