Few modern directors are better suited for the job than David Bruckner, the man behind the infamous surgery segment in Southbound.
In 2007’s The Signal, about a strange transmission that drives humanity mad, Bruckner generated intense anxiety during an opening salvo involving a woman fleeing a corpse-filled apartment building; in 2012’s V/H/S, his “Amateur Night” provided a chilling up-close-and-personal warning about the hazards of cruising for sex; and in 2015’s Southbound, his “The Accident” cast a caustic eye on one man’s best efforts to care for a woman he unintentionally hit with his car.
Unlike the evasiveness of the consistency of the whole sum of V/H/S (2012-14), Southbound (2015), Holidays (2016) and XX (2017), Wild Tales (2014) and now The Ballad of Buster Scruggs have mastered that which seemingly eludes so many filmmakers.
Ready or Not, the splatter-tastic, tongue-in-cheek horror comedy from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Southbound) is a subversive little slice of late summer mayhem that doubles as a masterclass in how not to welcome a new addition to the family.

Christopher Murphy, Ready or Not isn’t pretending to be something it’s not, but rather the best version of what it could hope to be.
It’s evident Busick, Murphy and co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (V/H/S) and Tyler Gillett (Southbound) have a kernel of an idea ruminating in their heads about classism and the power of the elite, but they simply can’t find a way to develop it into a worthwhile narrative.

But rather than merely settle for adequacy, filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Southbound) bring an exacting quality to the table that milks most of the potential for its lot, while giving lead Samara Weaving – who thoroughly impressed in 2017’s The Babysitter – room to barrel through the film like a force of nature.
David Bruckner’s directorial style has tamed cryptic creatures in The Ritual and faced limb-snapping gore in Southbound , which The Night House doesn’t consider—the director’s range extrapolates the chilling intimacy of a housebound haunted character.
