What critics compared Ferrari to
The film, which lands in theaters June 27 before a streaming release on Apple TV+, is a deft addition to a sturdy lineage of motorsport flicks, from Rush and Gran Turismo to Ford v Ferrari and, most recently, Ferrari.
The drawback of slightly underdeveloped characters behind the wheel of the cars is a lack of investment in the fate of the drivers, unlike something like Ford v Ferrari where we are invested in Christian Bale’s Ken Miles. Funnily enough, Michael Mann was an Executive Producer on that film so there are more than a few parallels.
Movies surrounding this topic can be successful, with Ford v Ferrari in 2019 serving as a massive hit. That movie also featured an actor playing Ferrari, but this is the movie that put him at the forefront. What makes this movie surprising is how little it actually does for its audience by the time the credits roll.
They are also sufficiently different to make this an interesting unofficial prequel to James Mangold's Ford v Ferrari, set the following decade.
