This is the American nuclear family, as imagined by Boaz Yakin ( Fresh , Safe ), a director who specializes in awkward mixtures of sentimentality and genre, and co-writer Sheldon Lettich, best known for his work with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Since 2000, his work has run the gamut: There's been an uplifting, star-driven football drama (Remember the Titans), a female-led comedy (Uptown Girls), a little-seen, Night Porter–influenced psychosexual odyssey (Death in Love), and a New York City–set Jason Statham vehicle (Safe).
Perhaps the key to these weird plot mechanics lies with co-writer Sheldon Lettich, a former Marine himself, and a veteran scribe and occasional helmer of multiple Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicles (including “Bloodsport” and “Double Impact”).
There is a version of this movie that is 2016’s Mad Max: Fury Road , and it is so close to that instant action classic that I’m a little mad it didn’t get all the way there.
