What critics compared The Salvation to
Much of the film’s look and sound is an homage: the melodic guitar pays tribute to Ennio Morricone; the frequent framing of people standing outside between two posts a blatant allusion to the final shot from The Searchers.
Shot on South African landscapes that go a good way toward faking the sienna-hued vistas of the American Southwest, and saluting John Ford's famous doorway shots from The Searchers at least a half-dozen times, The Salvation is severe and bloody stuff.
The Salvation, which is clearly taking its marching orders from Sergio Leone's filmography in everything from the way the violence is staged to the slightly yellowed color timing, comes to us a full fifty years after A Fistful of Dollars exploded itself over the world, and it doesn't really see fit to add much of anything to that model.
There’s even a dark joke about a coffin I particularly enjoyed, which reminded me of a great Clint Eastwood line in A Fistful of Dollars.
