It falls somewhere between an excusably hokey B-side to Scorsese’s recent Hitch tribute, Shutter Island, and an atrocious student film by someone equally obsessed with Twin Peaks and Edgar Allan Poe, neither of which he seems to grasp in a way that other fans will appreciate.
Pictorial elements such as ocean seas, skin tones, clothing fabrics and early evening light are vibrantly magnified by the 70mm celluloid so skillfully used by Anderson and cinematographer Mihai Malaimareh Jr. (Youth Without Youth, Tetro and Twixt for Francis Ford Coppola).
Romanian cinematographer Mihai Malaimare, a Coppola find who also shot Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, has a rare understanding of how to play to the strengths of digital video, contrasting detail-rich digital crispness with ominous shadows, and in the dream sequences, draining the images of most color, and sometimes all.
