Not only did their [REC] revitalize even the most cynical scary movie fan’s faith in their favorite film type, but their equally ambitious and masterful [REC]2 managed the unfathomable feat of expanding on the established mythology while making its own case for creepshow classicism.
[REC] and [REC] 2 used the usual limits of faux found footage—low image quality, erratic camera movement, deliberately wonky framing, etc.—to heighten tension and obscure the threats within an apartment building infested with a particularly improbable form of zombie virus.
Paco Plaza, who co-wrote and co-directed both [REC] (remade in the U.S. as Quarantine in 2008) and [REC] 2 with Jaume Balagueró, takes the reins alone here, and the result is briskly efficient and handsomely photographed (by the serendipitously named Pablo Rosso, who also worked on the previous two installments).
Paco Plaza turns his [REC] franchise on its rotting head with [REC]3: Genesis, switching up the series' blistering first-person-perspective terror for a more conventional, jokey and—much to the film's detriment—self-conscious approach.
[Rec]�: Genesis is a jarring and somewhat unwelcome shift into comedic territory for the successful Spanish found footage zombie series (which has further inspired the Quarantine films in the United States).
Where the first two [REC] films relied on claustrophobic tension and shaky camera to impress, the third film goes for a more conventional format that's backed by dark laughs and in-your-face violence.
