What critics compared Cinema Verite to
If the Safdie Brothers' last feature, Heaven Knows What, evoked The Panic in Needle Park with its cinema verite observation of the New York City heroin subculture, their impressive follow-up, Good Time, sees them continuing to draw inspiration from the gritty American movies of the 1970s, albeit with their own distinctive street edge.
The cinema verite obstructions of its production, meanwhile, recall The Blair Witch Project; like Myrick and Sanchez, director Rob Savage never shared a physical space with his actors, and left them to stage their own scares and effects within their own houses, opting (albeit by necessity) to pull the strings from afar.
Although not shot on an iPhone as Tangerine famously was, The Florida Project employs a similar cinema vérité style, the camera bobbing behind and nearby the characters, seeming to simply stumble upon them going about their business.
