What critics compared A Horrible Way to Die to
Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, who previously collaborated on the serial killer drama A Horrible Way to Die (2010) and a segment of the omnibus film V/H/S (2012), among others, You’re Next doesn’t quite live up to the best entries in the genre, including Michael Haneke’s Funny Games (1997) and Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers (2008).
The story goes that Wingard and Barrett brought their first movie "A Horrible Way to Die," recently released on DVD, to TIFF in hopes of getting into "Midnight Madness," but it was instead placed in a different category.
There may be no great originality on display in “You’re Next ,” the latest indie horror opus from Adam Wingard (“A Horrible Way to Die,” “Pop Skull”), but there’s certainly plenty of energy.
Director Wingard reunites several key cast members and his screenwriter (Simon Barrett) from his previous Midnight Madness entry, A Horrible Way to Die.
Editor/director Adam Wingard ("V/H/S") was working alone in a remote area and began to get creeped out thinking about home invasion movies, so he pitched his "A Horrible Way to Die" writer Simon Barrett with coming up with a new twist on the genre.
Wingard, working with a script from longtime collaborator Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die), gives home-invasion movies a desperately needed jolt of energy, making effective use of the kinds of thrills audiences expect while offering a rejoinder to the often-numbing simplicity of horror killers –and, crucially, their victims.
They've made a handful of intense horror features in the last six years, including "You're Next" and "A Horrible Way to Die," and contributed segments to the "V/H/S" films, anthologies that use the "found footage" style basically invented by "TBWP."
As early as 2010 he directed an excellent horror-thriller in A Horrible Way to Die, and had his first wide release in 2011 with the likewise solid twist on home invasion horror films, You’re Next.
Imaginatively titled Blair Witch, it's a sequel of sorts scripted by Barrett and helmed by Wingard, who are responsible for some of my favorite horror films of the decade, including A Horrible Way to Die, You're Next, and The Guest.
“Blair Witch,” the latest collaboration between writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard (they previously made “You’re Next,” “The Guest” and “A Horrible Way to Die”), is essentially a remake of “The Blair Witch Project” with better production values and a few added jolts of shock-horror.
When they made A Horrible Way To Die, it played some notable nerdy film festivals, and it got some love from genre reviewers and from the genre nerds who actually saw it.
With this commissioned sequel, filmed in secret under the title The Woods, director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett – who have worked together on a run of interesting genre fare (A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Guest) – are required to get the Blair Witch back in business.
