The movie bites from "True Lies" and many others (really, enough with the generic Russian villains, please), and director McG ("Charlie's Angels") always will favor the stylized explosion over the quiet moment.
Nearly two decades after James Cameron all but invented the "action romantic comedy" genre with "True Lies," mediocre action auteur McG tries to pull the same thing off again with the bottom-feeding mess "This Means War."
In the Tom Arnold "True Lies" supporting slot, Chelsea Handler (as Lauren's kibitzing married friend, Trish) offers smutty wisecracks a-plenty, if not a-funny, enough to risk thePG-13 rating; it took two appeals, in fact, to rate the film down from an R.
This Means War is credited to only two writers (one, Simon Kinberg, also wrote this film’s clear source of inspiration, Mr. and Mrs. Smith), but it feels like it was constructed by a committee with focus-group worksheets in hand.
This Means War isn’t a blight on humanity like The Ugly Truth or Jack and Jill.
