One day, on his daily commute back to the suburbs, a woman named Joanna (Vera Farmiga, another Collet-Serra veteran from his truly absurd 2009 horror Orphan), approaches Michael with a tantalizing offer: If he can identify a passenger "who shouldn't be here" by the time the train hits the end of the line, he'll get $100,000.
The director has done some interesting work outside their thrillers as well (his Orphan is still one of the more bonkers horror movies of the past decade), so it’s disappointing to see him and the always watchable Neeson deliver something so rote.
If you’ve seen his efficient, Blake Lively-starring shark movie The Shallows or glossy horror flick Orphan, you already know that Collet-Serra is a reliable name behind the camera to own up to genre clichés and use them with remarkable finesse and economy.

The director who once gave Liam Neeson increasingly (but entertainingly!) deadly obstacles to overcome in such excellent B-movie fare as The Commuter and Non-Stop, has evidently forgotten his genre lessons after being sucked into the Johnson-verse, starting with last year’s Jungle Cruise.

It’s obvious by that premise director Jaume Collet-Serra (“The Commuter”) and screenwriters Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa set out to make an old fashion, swashbuckling action-adventure movie in the vein of “Romancing the Stone” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Indeed, the film contains blockbuster-sized set pieces with thrilling chases, spectacular stunts and danger lurking around every river bend.
All five screenwriters and the director (a mediocrity named Jaume Collet-Serra, whose credits include The Shallows , The Commuter , and the remake of House of Wax ) are men, and you can tell every one of them went to work each day thinking, “Please, please, please, let no one call me a misogynist on Twitter.”
Director Jaume Collet-Serra has built a bit of a cult following, especially among aficionados of action cinema, mostly due to his flashes of visual cleverness and facility with spatial geography in movies like Orphan or The Commuter .

Collet-Serra has proven he can do this kind of no-nonsense action before in several of the better Liam Neeson films (“Run All Night,” “The Commuter”) and the thoroughly enjoyable “The Shallows.”
Collet-Serra, meanwhile, continues the slick, Tony Scott-lite style he brought to his earlier thrillers, and Carry-On could almost be considered a close relative of similar transport-based films like Non-Stop (Neeson on a plane) and The Commuter (Neeson on a train).
