What critics compared Country Strong to
Cooper’s movie reminded me of Shana Feste’s underrated Nashville saga from 2010, “Country Strong,” in which a hopeful male singer under the spell and tutelage of a female superstar comes to realize the underlying contradiction of his aspirations and concludes, “I don’t think that love and fame can live in the same place.”
Some of the basic details and visual touchstones are in place, but Feste (" Country Strong ") and co-writer Joshua Safran have reconfigured this story entirely—and, notably, omitted the Oscar-nominated Lionel Richie-Diana Ross theme song which was such a ubiquitous hit on radios and prom dance floors alike.

I might have been more kindly disposed toward the film before I sat down to watch it had I realized it’s from writer-director Shana Feste, who has made two other interesting melodramas about women, The Greatest and Country Strong — though both of those are juicier than this one, which is surprising considering that her cowriter here is Joshua Safran, who writes for the salacious TV series Gossip Girl.
In this new "Endless Love" -- directed by "Country Strong" filmmaker Shana Feste -- obsession gives way to shallower "Lady and the Tramp" class conflict with Gabriella Wilde as Jade and Alex Pettyfer as David.
Shana Feste, director of the lame Country Strong , doesn't just serve Spencer's tale of erotic obsession with a spoonful of sugar, she pours on the whole effing bowl.
