The last time bees had so much buzz on screen was in 2007 when the animated film Bee Movie was released (it also had a resurgence in 2016). Written by and starring Jerry Seinfeld, the Bee Movie portrays bees as class conscious, fighting for direct access to their honey and a fair system to be compensated. The Beekeeper contains a similar message of egalitarian struggle, but it isn’t so much a collective goal as a single man’s plan for payback in a society that ignores its elderly.
(Remember, Wick was a quiet guy who didn't want any trouble from anyone, until bad guys killed his dog.)The scammers are led by a scene-stealing David Witts, who plays Mickey Garnett, the slimy leader of a group of online thieves, who is like a tech bro version of "The Wolf of Wall Street's" Jordan Belfort by way of Topher Grace at his most smug.
At the data-mining center, Garnett — and later, Enzo Cilenti as Rico Anzalone, an even oilier scammer at an even larger sister operation — preens and postures like Jordan Belfort receiving the adulation of his brokerage acolytes in The Wolf of Wall Street. This being a David Ayer film, those offices are lit like flashy nightclubs.
Statham was already attached to star in The Beekeeper when Ayer received the script by Kurt Wimmer (Expend4bles, Equilibrium); while Ayer’s no stranger to action thanks to projects like End of Watch and 2016’s Suicide Squad, The Beekeeper being very much a Jason Statham movie was something, Ayer feels, that made it “really different from anything I’ve ever done.”
