Steven Soderbergh is no stranger to the genre, though Haywire wasn't to everyone's tastes this is, if possible, even more direct.
Soderbergh has dabbled in spy games before with the 2011 more action-oriented Haywire starring Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor and Fassbender.
As Hobbs’ new partner, MMA refugee Gina Carano combines buxom beauty and unbridled lethality as she did in the overlooked “Haywire.”
A womano-y-womano between Carano and Rodriguez is a reminder of how greatly Carano's talents were used by Steven Soderbergh in Haywire.
Only Rodriguez could butt heads with Gina Carano (the MMA fighter-actress of "Haywire," playing Hobbs' partner) and then pull off a surprisingly tender scene with Diesel , who murmurs suggestive metaphors like "You lose traction and the back end kicks out."
Yet while Fast & Furious 6 is firmly set in the world of male fantasy (with plenty shots of shiny cars and fit butts in short shorts), it’s great to see the ladies kick-ass as well, with special mention to professional fighter turned actress Gina Carano who has capitalised on the breakthrough Steven Soderbergh gave her on Haywire to quite possibly become the next big female action star.
MMA fighter and Haywire star Gina Carano is brought in as Hobbs's partner, and as you may have noticed endlessly in the ads, there's a return appearance from Michelle Rodriguez as Letty, whom we all thought we saw dying in a giant fireball at the end of Fast and Furious.
Lin has even brought in “ Haywire ” star Gina Carano (as Hobbs’ right-hand man) to serve as the perfect adversary for Letty, leading to a pair of fight scenes that are almost as good as the Diesel/Johnson brawl from the last film.
Gina Carano is still an interesting presence in any film, though she may never achieve the level of creative energy afforded her by Steven Soderbergh in Haywire , a film which should have launched a celebrated career, but ultimately didn’t.
Throughout this business, Wade belittles his tormenter Francis and his assistant, Angel Dust (played by the ever excellent Gina Carano, still consigned to sidekick parts following her terrific starring turn in Haywire ), whom Wade calls “a less angry Rosie O’Donnell”.
For his part, Ajax has his own one-woman hit squad in Angel Dust (mixed martial arts champ and Haywire star Gina Carano).

After all, we’ve been treated to the likes of Angelina Jolie (Salt, Lara Croft), Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) and young Saoirse Ronan (Hanna).
This flavor of regret and inevitability gives John Wick some spice to go with its standard-issue car crashes and throwdowns, which pit Reeves against a dozen opponents at once in the kind of close-quarters, fast-paced, intricately choreographed tests of dexterity and fast thinking that characterized Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire.
Stahelski and producer David Leitch are longtime stunt kingpins, and in their debut at the helm, they place the outstanding action dead center (fight coordination credited to Jonathan Eusebio , who worked on “The Wolverine” and “Haywire”).
Some of them are good (like “Bubble” and “Side Effects”), some are meh (like “Haywire”), and one is great (“The Girlfriend Experience”); none of them make much of an impact in the marketplace.
It's also proof once again that director Steven Soderbergh is both fantastic at delivering crisp, efficient work (“Haywire”) but also that he's better when given time to find depth and surprise.
Like a visceral mishmash of the latter’s goofily entertaining bicycle messenger gem Premium Rush and the former’s playfully superb Haywire , this is a well-paced jolt of adrenaline that remembers to put character first, all without skimping on a single ounce of suspense.
