The film takes its time with this tense setup, the across-the-table fireworks and the gradual wine-fueled reconciliation -- so much so that audiences may begin to wonder if they've wandered into Mike Leigh's "Another Year" by mistake.
But a better description might be that “Bridesmaids” is the comedy version of Mike Leigh’s “Another Year.”
He’s done that again here by working with Day-Lewis for the second time (after There Will Be Blood) and newcomers to the Anderson fold, Lesley Manville (Another Year) and Vicky Krieps (A Most Wanted Man).
Lesley Manville, the fabulous actress from Another Year (2010), is stupendous as the perfectly coiffed Cyril, especially in the scene in which she demolishes her obdurate brother by reminding him of her superior debating skills.
Lesley Manville ( Another Year ), as Cyril, is his equal in frigidity, though with a sly, knowing look in her eye.
Manville, an exquisite actress arguably best known for working with Mike Leigh in films like Another Year, Topsy-Turvy, Vera Drake and Mr. Turner and a woman who has in my opinion never gotten her full due as a virtuoso talent capable of just about anything, is insanely good.
Lesley Manville — who has already proved her brilliance in films like “Another Year” — is riveting as the dynamic sister, harnessing the inner anguish yet protection of her creative brother.
Getting away for a weekend from the rigidly ordered life that he and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville, "Another Year") lead running London's greatest couture house, Reynolds Woodcock's (Daniel Day-Lewis) eye is captured by clumsy, young Eastern European waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps), who teases him over his gluttonous breakfast order.
