What critics compared The Ward to
Written by the fledgling team of Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, brothers whose only previous produced credit was the low-profile 1995 thriller Long Distance, The Ward draws heavily on familiar genre situations and set-ups, and (possible spoiler!) owes a particular debt to Identity (2003).
Plus recent psychiatric-themed horror/thrillers like Identity and Shutter Island have already covered this story competently enough.
Each of the actresses has a distinct presence, and teases at a backstorycompare this to the interchangeable Suicide Girls in Zack Snyders Sucker Punch loony bin from earlier this year.
Letâs pretend that this yearâs Sucker Punch and last yearâs Shutter Island didnât happen to cover similar territory with a more pronounced sense of style (though Iâd argue only the latter ultimately succeeded).
Borrowing a page from Zack Snyder -- who put the "suck" in " Sucker Punch " earlier this year -- Carpenter takes us to a 1960s-era mental institution, and for the same reasons Snyder did: because the torture chamber therapies of that era are truly scary things.
