The talky drama veers dangerously close to indulging the petty problems of pretty people, but writer-director Massy Tadjedin gives the action a seductive sheen and refuses to turn her characters into "Closer"-style monsters.
It’s reminiscent of the scenes in Eyes Wide Shut when Tom Cruise learns that Nicole Kidman was once attracted to another man: artificial yet fraught at the same time, an argument that’s probably based on something else.
The film is as shiny and thin as a coat of nail varnish, but beguilingly photographed by Peter Deming, who shot the Scream quartet and David Lynch's Mulholland Drive.
